The Marshall City Council was asked to approve an ordinance to create a Tax Increment Financing- or TIF- Commission during its meeting Monday, May 20.
City Administrator David Haugland explained.
Haugland said the city brought in an attorney he has worked with in the past, who helps set up TIF Commissions; and he will make sure going forward that whatever is submitted meets the intent of the law.
Haugland pointed out the council has the ultimate authority as to whether or not a TIF project is going to move forward or not.
According to the proposed ordinance, if approved, the commission will consist of 11 members- six appointed by the city; two by the school board; two by the county; and one by all of the other taxing jurisdictions combined.
The council approved the first reading of the proposed ordinance. A second reading will be conducted at a future meeting.
