Marshall City Council members took several minutes to update the status of old Fitzgibbon Hospital during their meeting on Monday, August 5.
Ward 1 Councilman Ron Ott opened the discussion by pointing out this is a way to be transparent with residents. City Administrator David Haugland explained what’s going on with the dilapidated structure on South Brunswick Avenue that has been condemned.

Haugland said the conservative estimate to tear down the building is $250,000 minimum- not including any asbestos removal, which he said “could be staggering.”
Ott said the city is anxious to get something done.

Mayor Julie Schwetz also pointed out that she and Ward 2 Councilman Chuck Hines talked to a resident in that neighborhood who expressed his concerns and how upset he was about nothing seemingly being done at a recent council meeting. Hines said they told the gentleman the building has been condemned, and he appreciated it.
