A 34-year-old Lexington man is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly breaking into a house and assaulting a man and a woman on August 5.
According to a probable-cause statement, a Lexington Police officer arrived at the scene of a reported disturbance in progress and found a woman and a man who had been assaulted by a knife and a baseball bat, respectively. The injured persons reportedly were transported to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence for treatment.
Two days later, the woman filled out a statement alleging 34-year-old Kevin Barnett was the perpetrator. She said he had fled the scene prior to the arrival of authorities. The woman suffered stab wounds to her left arm; and at the time the report was filed, the man who was assaulted was still in the hospital in critical condition on life support.
According to online court documents, Barnett has been charged with a Class A Felony for Assault in the First Degree, Causing Serious Physical Injury; a Class B Felony for Burglary in the First Degree; a Class D Felony for Domestic Assault in the Second Degree; and an Unclassified Felony for Armed Criminal Action. Bond has been fixed at $100,000 cash or surety.
Barnett was arraigned and entered a plea of not guilty on August 21. His next hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
