An area law-enforcement agency is warning residents of a couple of scams.
According to a post on the Higginsville Police Department’s Facebook page, several members in the community reportedly have been receiving phone calls, during which the callers are stating they are with the IRS, there is an issue, and you owe money. They say if a certain dollar amount is not paid in a certain time frame, you will have a warrant issued for your arrest.
The post says, “To make this clear, this is a scam. The IRS does not operate in this manner.”
The second complaint is a caller is stating they are with the IRS and there has been an issue with your social-security number- such as it is been suspended- and you need to call a different number to have the issue addressed.
This also is a scam.
The post says “Do not return this phone call; and do not volunteer any information to the calling parties if you are speaking to a live person.”
These are phishing scams, and the purpose of the calls is to get you to give out your personal information so it can be misused. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to these types of scams.
You are urged to discuss these scams with your family and friends to make sure they understand.
If you receive a phone calls that you believe to be a scam, hang up the phone. If you have questions, feel free to call your local law-enforcement agency. The phone number to the Higginsville Police Department is (660) 584-2104.
