A Mexico, Mo., man has been charged with felonies after he allegedly caused a traffic crash in Lafayette County on Tuesday, September 3.
According to a probable-cause statement, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper was dispatched to the scene of the crash on U.S. Highway 24, east of Waterloo Road. The trooper observed a vehicle off the south side of the highway in a cornfield. The woman who was driving the vehicle said she was traveling eastbound with her ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Leryan Glynn Lewis. She said he became agitated, grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it to the right, causing the vehicle to travel off the right side of the highway and sideswipe a tree. Lewis told authorities he grabbed the wheel because the woman had let go of it. There were two children- ages 4 and 2- in the vehicle, as well. All of the vehicle’s occupants were checked out by Wellington E.M.S. personnel; and Lewis was transported to Lafayette Regional Health Center in Lexington after complaining of back pain. He was treated, arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Jail.
According to online court documents, Lewis has been charged with two counts of a Class D Felony for Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree; and a Class E Felony for Domestic Assault in the Third Degree. Bond has been set at $15,000.
Lewis’ initial hearing is pending at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
