An area law-enforcement agency is alerting residents of a scam.
According to a post on the Cooper County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, it received a phone call from an individual (not in Cooper County) who indicated they had gotten a call from the sheriff’s office’s phone number.
That person said the scammer identified themselves as being with “U.S. Legal Support” and advised that there was a warrant for their arrest. The rest of the call followed along the lines of most scams (i.e. – the representative could clear up the issue on the phone if a credit card could be provided). The department reminds residents it does not do business this way.
The scammer was spoofing the office number to make it appear the call was originating from the office.
Residents are advised to never give personal information or banking information, of any kind for any reason, to someone who calls you. In fact, it is best not to talk to the caller, and just hang up immediately!
If you want to check and see if someone called you from a particular organization or agency, look up the number from an independent source. Do not call back to a number a caller has given you. This is a way to keep your assets and your information safe.
