WARRENSBURG, MO (October 10, 2019)-According to a news release from the University of Central Missouri, the UCM Literacy Team helped promote the importance of reading when they visited four local schools in October. Over the last two weeks, Central Missouri student-athletes visited Martin Warren, Maple Grove, Sterling and Ridgeview Elementary.
Not only did they participate by reading books and interacting with the students, the books are donated to the school libraries. Funds are provided through the Eleanor G. Hughes and Carol Dyetta Hughes Literacy Program at the University of Central Missouri, with additional funding provided by UCM Athletic partners: Bi-Lo Country Mart, Cash Saver Food Outlet, Central Bank, Country Kitchen, DQ Grill-n-Chill, Equity Bank, F&C Bank, J.W. Franklin Co., Jimmy John’s, Pizza Hut, Rib Crib, Sodexo, Traditions, UCM Store, Warrensburg Collision, Western Missouri Medical Center, and Zaxby’s.
The newly purchased books are selected by librarians at the elementary schools and purchased in conjunction with the literacy program through Readers World of Warrensburg.
This was the 28th year of the UCM Literacy Team program which started in 1992. This past summer, the program earned a commendation from the American Association of School Librarians for their support of the school librarian profession and the learners the profession serves.
