On Saturday, October 26, the Mar-Saline Branch of the NAACP will host its Annual Freedom Fund and Awards Banquet.
A news release says the event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Martin Community Center in Marshall.
This year’s theme is “Be A Champion for Change”.
Dr. Jerald Jones-Woolfolk is this year’s honored speaker. Dr. Woolfolk believes in the power of excellence and a Change Agent. She is an innovator, pioneer and maverick leader who blazed a path as a successful educator and administrator. Now serving as the 20th President of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Dr. Woolfolk believes personal empowerment through self-determination and education are the keys to achieving excellence.
The “Community Service Award” will be awarded to Jean Harms for her advocacy as City Administrator, volunteerism on numerous boards and organizations.
Donald G. Stouffer will be awarded the “Josephine Lawrence Humanitarian Award” for his acts of generosity, kindness and service to his community and his acts of humanity towards victims.
Recognition will be given to the local unit’s scholarship recipient for 2019, Selena Howerton, who is a resident of Higginsville and a freshman at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
The NAACP is celebrating its 110th year. The local branch is 80 years old.
