Saline County Assessor Jessica Goodman says she’s concerned about a petition that’s making its rounds in the area and around the state.
During the meeting of the county commission on Thursday, November 21, Goodman says it has to do with trying to get a measure on the 2020 ballot to vote on whether on not to do away with the personal property tax in the state. She urges area residents to be very cautious.
Goodman says if this measure gets on the ballot and is passed by the voters, it will significantly impact the county, the fire districts and ambulance districts. She says: “all of those districts will lose a significant amount of revenue.”
Southern District Commissioner Monte Fenner said one example they gave was “a retired couple, and at this time they’re paying $1,450 for their real estate. Their car is 12 years old, and they’re only paying $20 for it. So, if this goes into effect, that $20 goes away, but the real estate goes up by double. So, they would be paying $2,800 to $2,900 (in real-estate taxes) – saving 20 bucks on a vehicle.”
