A couple of residents were present to discuss the possibility of opening a hemp processing facility during the meeting of the Sweet Springs Board of Aldermen on Monday, January 13.
According to meeting minutes, Tony Gonzales and Matt Guier said they possibly will employ from 10 to 15 persons at the oil-production facility, where they would be extracting and processing the oils. These oils then would be sold to be used in CBD products. They said for hemp to be legal, it must be below .03 percent THC content.
The men said starting this year, hemp will be considered a cash crop- just like corn and soybeans with USDA.
The men further explained that hemp is a completely different plant from marijuana. They said that absolutely no cannabis production will be done at this facility.
Alderman Boyd Jones said he did not think that anything differently needed to be done for this business than any other business to be opened and operated in Sweet Springs.
After some discussion, Guier said he will keep the aldermen informed on the progress of the potential business.
