A Kansas City man is facing multiple felony charges after a reported break-in and theft of vehicles in Lafayette County on Sunday, January 26.
According to the Higginsville Police Department, shortly after 1 a.m., several subjects broke into the Hughes Chrysler dealership to obtain keys to new vehicles parked in the lot. After exiting the building, the subjects stole two new vehicles from the lot.
Higginsville dispatch received an alarm call from the dealership. At the same time, an on-duty Higginsville officer happened to be close by on stationary patrol and observed one of the vehicles traveling north on Highway 13 as it was leaving the dealership. The subject fled in the stolen vehicle a short distance before crashing the vehicle at 24th Terrace and Highway 13. He then fled on foot.
Higginsville officers were able to get the subject in custody after a short foot pursuit. The suspect is identified as Anthony Berry Jr., of Kansas City.
He has been charged by the Lafayette County Prosecutor with Tampering with a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree; Resisting/Interfering with an Arrest for a Felony; Burglary in the Second Degree; and Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident. He is being held on $50,000 cash-or-surety bond.
The other suspects were able to get away in the other stolen vehicle. It is believed that these individuals are part of a large theft ring targeting Dodge and Chrysler dealerships all over the KC metro area. This is the second such incident at the Hughes Chrysler Dealership in Higginsville. The investigation in this case is ongoing.
