Authorities are warning area residents about a scam.
The Cooper County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report on Wednesday, February 5, that someone from its office was identifying themselves as Sgt. Yates, and attempted to solicit payment for a “warrant” from a local citizen.
The scammer told the reporting party the payment for the warrant would need to be made by means of a Walmart e-pay card.
Cooper County authorities say: “Fortunately, the potential victim checked with our office.”
Cooper County authorities say they will never contact you by phone nor email trying to solicit payment on a warrant.
Cooper County authorities also say: “please be cautious to avoid any suspicious contact from law enforcement. If you have doubts, please call the agency to verify if the suspicious contact is legitimate or not.”
