An area superintendent of schools has issued a letter of information about the coronavirus (COVID-19).
A release from New Franklin R-1 Superintendent Brian Cordel says the virus is what is on all of our minds. He says the New Franklin School District continues to monitor the status of COVID-19 and is actively working on plans related to prevention and alternative instructional options for students should closure become necessary. As of now, New Franklin School District is still open for school. Unlike some states that have made mandatory statewide school closures, Missouri has local school district control.
Cordel says the district is in regular contact with lead agencies and working directly with local health officials. At this time, the three public schools in Howard County will be meeting at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 16, to develop a plan for the county schools to follow to ensure they are making the best decisions for the schools and communities. He says they also are following guidance related to school closures from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
Cordel adds this situation is changing quickly. He wants you to know that school personnel are currently working to learn all they can to make the best possible decisions for school families, faculty, staff and the community. High-stake decisions are made with the utmost thought and care. Regardless of any rumors or speculation you may have heard, at this time, the district has made no decisions to cancel school, and will not make this decision until it has been advised by the local health department or DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has opened an information hotline that is being operated by medical professionals and is available 24 hours a day, should you have medical questions related to COVID-19. The hotline number is (877) 435-8411.
Cordel says the district will send updates as soon as they become available.
