Trying to figure out how to keep yourself and your children healthy and happy during a time where many people have chosen self-isolation could be a daunting task.
Timothy Vaugniaux, licensed psychologist at Mefford Vuagniaux & Associates PC suggests to get a routine going. He said it’s good to have a plan in place for each day.
Even though the children may be out of school, it’s a good idea to plan a time for learning. Parents can reach out to your child’s school or teachers and see if any classes are being offered online.
Vaugniaux suggests exercise, having your children help with chores around the house, read a book, or maybe do some arts and crafts.
He said this is also a good time to sit down with your children and have some family discussion time. Talk about COVID-19 and how it is affecting society. The better informed you are, the more you can inform your children. Parents don’t want to ensue panic in their children during this time, but they should be honest regarding current events.
Vaugniaux also suggested making time for your children to communicate with their peers electronically, if possible.
Being isolated from society can cause anxiety in anyone, children included. Talk to your children about their feelings and how this is taking a toll on them. If you start to see a change in your child’s behavior, for example: depression, isolating themselves from the family, anger issues, etc Vaugniaux suggests contacting a health care professional.
