Marshall High School Principal Ian Verts gave an update during the school board meeting on Tuesday, March 24.
Unofficial minutes say Verts said he met with all of his teachers regarding credits, dual credits, making up assignments, getting assignments to students and Internet connections. He said third-quarter grades will be the students’ safety-net grades.
Verts said students were surveyed as to who had Internet access or a device. Survey results were 65.1 percent reported they have a device at home; 13.4 percent said they don’t; and 21.5 percent did not respond. The survey said 71 percent said yes to having Internet access at home; 7.2 percent said no; and 21.8 percent did not respond. Verts said teachers are going to continue to call students and update the info as it is obtained.
It was decided that Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher and Verts will send out a letter to all MHS students explaining how assignments will be handled while school is out during the Coronavirus Pandemic. At this time, school is scheduled to be out through Friday, April 3.
In her report, Dr. Maher said prom and graduation currently are scheduled take place on their original dates. She said statewide testing has been canceled; and the ACT has been rescheduled for June 13.
Dr. Maher also said the economy has been hard on school finances. She will be meeting with Jim Papreck and Mindi Coslet to work on salaries for the 2020-21 school year.
Dr. Maher also said the elementary division has posted activities to do for each week, which will be called the “MPS Elementary Owls School Week.”
