Director of Curriculum and Instruction Diane Gillaspie delivered her report during the Marshall School Board meeting on Tuesday, April 21.
According to unofficial meeting minutes, Gillaspie reported communication will be sent to the teachers in regards to what principals will be looking for in each teacher’s work log. These guidelines were collaborated on by principals, and many of these were ones that were already being logged by teachers in different buildings. Academics for the remainder of the year will address standards the district can review for practice for students, as well as enrichment activities for new instruction as teachers feel necessary. Marshall High School and the Saline County Career Center will follow credit requirements for student instruction.
Gillaspie said for school reentry, teachers will be collaborating at grade and content level and then vertically to address the standards that the district’s students did not receive instruction during the closure due to COVID-19. Virtual time will be provided this school year for these meetings, as well as if and when the school returns to regular session in the fall for teachers to collaborate for this missed instruction.
Gillaspie said summer school has not been canceled. The district is waiting on communication from DESE’s summer-school task force on what summer-school guidelines will look like during this pandemic.
Kindergarten through eighth-grade principals will meet to discuss grading for fourth-quarter report cards. Kindergarten registration continues through April 30 online. At this time, kindergarten screening still is scheduled to be held the first week of June.
