During the meeting of the Glasgow School Board on Wednesday, May 13, the board discussed the request from the city of Fayette to return a fine paid by the city for failure to file the city’s financial report in 2018.
According to meeting minutes, the district will receive approximately $31,493 of the $151,410 fine.
Mayor Grafton Cook was present to represent the city of Fayette and answer questions. The district has forwarded all information to its attorneys for additional guidance regarding the lawfulness of returning the fine money to the city of Fayette. No action was taken, as the matter is under legal review.
In other news, Superintendent Sonya Fuemmeler updated the board on COVID-19-related matters and the new CARES Act funding. At this time, districts are being advised to budget conservatively as the total budget impact of COVID-19 remains unknown.
CARES Act preliminary allocations have been shared with districts across the state. Glasgow stands to receive approximately $35,000. These relief funds must be used to address the impact of COVID-19 has had and continues to have on schools. The board discussed plans to use the funds to increase technology access for students in the event of future school closures; to provide for training for faculty and staff on distance learning such as ZOOM and Google Classroom; and to purchase online instructional materials. Other purchases will include cleaning and disinfecting materials and additional thermometers for assessing student and faculty health.
The district also says it will be working all summer on plans for reopening school in the fall. The district is hopeful the Department of Education will work to provide all school districts the necessary information to reopen school and assist in making a seamless transition.
