A Kansas City resident who was released from the Cooper County Detention Center on April 27, allegedly stole a vehicle and has been charged with another felony.
According to a probable-cause statement, on April 29, a Cooper County resident reported to authorities that Elijah Devonta Carter had made statements about finding a vehicle on the side of the road with the keys in it shortly after being released from custody. The law-enforcement officer obtained a picture of the flatbed truck, which had pumps and plastic containers of liquids on it.
The vehicle was reported as being taken from private property off of Chestnut Road. The owner said he did not give anybody permission to access the vehicle.
On April 30, the Kansas City Police Department located the vehicle, and it was being operated by Carter, who made statements claiming ownership. The owner of the truck provided a receipt and reported the farming chemicals- valued at $11,700- that were on the truck were missing.
Carter has been charged with a Class D Felony for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree. Bond has been set at $7,500 cash or surety.
Carter’s initial hearing is pending at Cooper County Circuit Court.
