The City of Sedalia received a 2019 Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM) Grant through the Missouri Department of Conservation.
A news release says the grant provided funds for completion of a partial tree re-inventory along certain street right-of-ways and on public property, such as Housel and Hubbard Parks.
This year’s partial re-inventory included a total of 1,926 trees. The areas included in the re-inventory were: north city limits to 3rd Street and U.S. Highway 65 (Limit Avenue) to Mill Street; 3rd Street to U.S. Highway 50 (Broadway Avenue); and Osage Avenue to Marshall Avenue; and Mill Street to Heard Avenue; and Boonville Street to the Union Pacific Railroad. The City’s Street Department staff has been working on trees identified in the re-inventory as needing maintenance including trimming or removal.
Trees also were planted this year as part of the TRIM-grant funded efforts. The islands along 16th Street in front of the Missouri State Fairgrounds have had four new trees added. Working with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri Department of Transportation, four Regal Prince Oak trees were planted.
All agencies agreed these trees can be maintained in such a manner to ensure driver visibility will be unimpaired. The Sedalia Parks and Recreation Department will be caring for the roadway islands, including the new trees.
Additionally, three new trees were added to the grove established in 2018 on public property in a location adjacent to Crown Hill Cemetery. The trees planted included swamp white oak and autumn blaze maple.
The TRIM grant also funded fliers with a tree-care calendar and shared information with the community about the emerald ash borer. These fliers were provided to over 10,000 homes in our community through water utility billings.
