After many sports were cancelled due to COVID-19, many were sure if there were going to be any sporting events held this summer.
State Fair Community College has announced the State Fair Community College Athletics’ ninth annual SFCC golf tournament will be held Monday, July 27. There will be live and silent auctions open to the public with proceeds benefiting athletic scholarships.
The three-person scramble costs $100 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and lunch. Teams have a choice of an 8 a.m. or a 2 p.m. tee time. Prizes for the tournament will be Sedalia Country Club Pro Shop credit based on a full field.
The tournament is divided into four flights with awards given to the top four teams in each flight based on a full field. The first place winners of each flight will receive $300 in pro shop credit; second place $200, third place $150, and fourth place $100.
Because of the challenges small and local businesses are facing as a result of the pandemic, the Athletics Department is not soliciting sponsorships this year, but will honor last year’s sponsors by displaying their sponsorship signage from last year’s tournament. However, the Athletics Department is collecting donated items for the auctions.
Golf tournament entry forms should be submitted to Noah Kelly at the Sedalia Country Club, and checks payable to the SFCC Foundation. Online registration is available at sfccmoroadrunners.com under the SUPPORT tab. Mulligans will be available for $15 per team at the check-in table on July 27. For additional information or assistance, call SFCC Athletics at (660) 596-7232.
Anyone who wants to donate items can contact Softball Head Coach Lyndsey Talbot at ltalbot@sfccmo.edu or at (573) 301-2768. Monetary contributions in any amount are welcomed and appreciated.
The live auction will start 45 minutes after the 2 p.m. round finishes for anyone who wants to support student-athlete scholarships. Silent auction bidding will begin at 8 a.m. and close 30 minutes after the 2 p.m. round is finished.
“For the silent auction, we plan to have various autographed sports memorabilia, which are popular items,” said Lyndsey Talbot, SFCC softball head coach. “We will also have items from the SFCC athletic teams and probably some spa packages and a good variety of other items.”
Proceeds will be used to fund general athletic scholarships or can be designated for a specific scholarship such as the Mike Bryson Memorial Scholarship (men and women’s soccer), the Bob Oehrke Memorial Scholarship (women’s basketball), the Kent Gwaltney Memorial Scholarship (men’s basketball), the Ross Dey Memorial Scholarship (baseball), and the Mandy Thomas Memorial Scholarship (softball).
“It’s so much fun to meet community members at the golf tournament and auction,” said Talbot. “The funds raised are very important to all of our athletic programs, and we appreciate all of the support we receive from our community.”
The tournament will be held, at the Sedalia Country Club, 5074 Highway Y.
