The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education met in executive session on Monday, June 22.
During the meeting the board discussed issues related to ongoing legal and personnel issues.
According to Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher the Board cannot comment on the details of an executive-session discussion of this nature and at this point in time, the Board – as a government entity – is working carefully and deliberatively to address such critical issues expeditiously.
Additionally, the Board publicly affirms its commitment to its goal to “provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment that contributes to the academic success, confidence, and well-being of all students.”
Dr. Maher went on to say that recent events in the country and in the Marshall community have brought to the forefront the need for more attention to issues of race, diversity, and equity. The Board recognizes this urgent need.
As a first response, the Board has committed to initiating annual diversity-sensitivity training for all district personnel and Board members.
Administrators have been tasked with identifying opportunities for such training through the Missouri School Boards Association and other independent organizations.
Options for training will presented by Administrators at the July 2020 Board of Education meeting, and training will be implemented this fall. Moving forward, the Board will continue its investigation of opportunities to improve the ways in which MPS can provide safe and inclusive environments for all MPS students, staff, and community members.
