A heat advisory has been issued for the entire KMMO listening area until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 19.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected throughout the weekend. Dangerously hot and humid conditions will start spreading across Missouri Friday, July 17. The worst of the heat and humidity will likely peak Saturday afternoon, with oppressive conditions persisting into Sunday. There might be some relief from the sultry conditions by Monday with storm chances returning to the region.
During the Heat Advisory, heat indices are expected to be as high as 106 degrees. The biggest threat of dangerous heat is from noon on Saturday through 9 p.m. on Sunday.
It is recommended that people drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call 9-1-1.
Areas predicted to be impacted include Saline, Carroll, Chariton, Cooper, Howard, Lafayette and Pettis Counties in the KMMO listening area.
