An area law-enforcement agency is alerting residents about a scam.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report from an individual stating they got a call from a male subject with a heavy foreign accent claiming to be Agent Max Daniels with the DEA out of Dallas, Texas. The caller was letting them know their social-security number had been used in drug trafficking and money laundering. The caller asked for a name, date of birth, the last four digits of their social-security number and banking information. The calling party began naming different high-profile banks in hopes that the reporting party would identify their bank name. This part of the conversation is where the reporting party became suspicious and terminated the phone call. The reporting party was able to get a phone number off their caller ID and immediately contacted the sheriff’s office.
Further investigation revealed the phone number provided by the reporting party was a legitimate number for the Dallas DEA Office. It appears the suspect(s) had cloned the number to the Dallas office making the call seem more realistic to the victim. The Dallas DEA office is now aware its phone number has been cloned and used in a scam situation.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to be aware of the latest phone scam and requests you share and educate all family members.
