meteor-shower-8-13-20

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. If conditions are right, area residents might have one more chance to view a meteor shower on Thursday, August 13.

According to the Pettis County Emergency Management Agency, the Perseid Meteor Shower is peaking this week. EMA officials say: “Just step outside, allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and look to the sky between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. for the peak of the meteors flying in all parts of the sky.”

They say you don’t need any special equipment or a lot of skills to view a meteor shower. All you really need is a clear sky and some patience.

They recommend you find a secluded viewing spot away from the city lights. Once at the venue, your eyes may take 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark. Dress for the weather and make sure you are comfortable, especially if you plan to stay out long. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair with you as meteor watching can be a waiting game.
