Harris English shot a 7-under 64 on Thursday morning at TPC Boston for a share of the lead with Kevin Streelman, Cameron Davis, and Russell Henley at The Northern Trust.
English, who ranks fifth in strokes gained: total since the PGA Tour restart in June, got off to a blazing start with an eagle and two birdies through his first four holes. He added another five birdies to his card – offset by two bogeys – to secure his eventual share of the 18-hole lead.
Davis reached 8-under par but bogeyed his penultimate hole to drop back into a tie for first.
Henley capped his bogey-free performance in style by going birdie-eagle on Nos. 17 and 18.
Daniel Berger, Adam Scott, and Tommy Fleetwood are the three top-20 ranked players who posted 5-under first rounds. Fleetwood also touched 8-under but played his final two holes at 3-over to drop into a tie for 12th.
Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas shot a 3-under to fall into a share of 30th place. Rory McIlroy posted a 69 to sit in a tie for 51st.
Round 2 is Friday.
