The start of classes has been delayed in a Howard County school district.
According to a release from Glasgow Superintendent Sonya Fuemmeler, the district has decided to postpone the start of school until at least Monday, August 31.
Fuemmeler’s release says: “As you may have already heard, we are experiencing some community spread in our district boundaries. There has been one confirmed positive case at St. Mary’s, and others are being tested. In addition, we were notified (Monday, August 24) that we have a school employee who is also being tested. This postponement will allow time for test results to be returned, as well as possible symptoms to appear.”
Fuemmeler says the district doesn’t know what this postponement will do to its school-year calendar. District administrators have been in contact with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Area Supervisor Jay Reese, who will help the district determine if it will need to make up these days later in the school year.
The release also says all face-to-face, extra-curricular practices and activities are cancelled until at least Monday. However, your child’s coach may contact your student regarding a virtual practice.
Fuemmeler also says the district is sorting through many unanswered questions. As it works through this process, the district will continue to provide parents/guardians and students with updates via e-mail as soon as possible.
