Due to staffing issues with the Carroll County Ambulance District, CCAD is unable to transfer patients with serious illnesses that would require a higher level of care.
Ambulance districts in the surrounding area are staffed primarily with highly trained Paramedics under Advanced Life Support designation. This means, when a patient is picked up in the field or transferred to another hospital, the paramedic can administer medication through an IV, start an airway or maintain life-staining breathing equipment, just to mention a few items.
At this time, CCAD has only one paramedic, who serves as the Administrator of CCAD. The remaining staff are EMT-B certified and are able to transport patients under Basic Life Support designation if no paramedic is on duty. These staff members are limited by licensure in their ability to render all levels of care needed.
