
A 22-year-old Sweet Springs resident charged with a felony for leading a law-enforcement officer on a high-speed chase in Lafayette County on July 24 has plead guilty to the charges.
According to a report from a Lafayette County deputy, when he attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver sped off and traveled at speeds of 95 mph in a 30 mph zone on Pine Street in Higginsville; then at more than 100 mph on Route T; and more than 120 mph on I-70.
Gabriel Cox was taken into custody after he struck a tire-deflation device, causing his vehicle to slow and come to a stop at the 59 mile marker. While Conducting a search of Cox, an officer located a small black container that contained a light brown wax substance in his front left pocket.
Cox was originally charged with a Class E Felony for Resisting Arrest, Detention or Stop by Fleeing and a drug-related misdemeanor.
Cox waived his formal arraignment on September 21 and entered a plea of not guilty. The following day, September 22, Cox withdrew his not guilty plea and entered a plea of guilty to the felony charge of Resisting Arrest, Detention or Stop by Fleeing. The court dismissed the drug related misdemeanor. Cox was sentenced to three years in the Missouri Department of Corrects with credit for time served.
