A decision was not made by the Marshall School Board during its meeting on Tuesday, September 22, regarding how to fix Cecil Naylor Football Field.

On July 27, a person drove their truck onto the field and caused thousands of dollars of damage, making the field unplayable for the 2020 season. Michael Terrell Baker is the alleged perpetrator.

Unofficial minutes from the meeting say during the August meeting, the board discussed replacing the sod. A bid had been received from Mid-America Sports Construction for $74,123. Earlier this year, a committee had met to discuss putting turf on the field, and it was suggested it meet and discuss the possibility again.

Board member Ellen Lance reported bids had been received from a Kansas City and Memphis, Tennessee, firm. The district has $250,000 reserved for this project and will receive $75,000 from the insurance company for damage done to the field. Money that would need to be raised is $1.1 million to do the turf and track.

Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher said if this is going to be considered a district project, there are legal issues to consider.

Board President Dr. Erin Meyer said she will contact the district’s attorney for guidance.

The board is scheduled to hold a special meeting on October 6 to make a decision.
