The Sweet Springs Board of Aldermen approved a couple of action items during a special meeting on Thursday, September 24.

According to unofficial minutes, Mayor Franny Vaught informed the board the city received only one bid for the pressure sewer line. The bid from Earthworks Excavation Associates LLC, of Higginsville, was for $140,130, with three additional alternates adding $12,868 to the price tag. Public Works Superintendent Nate Lea was asked by Alderman Boyd Jones if all three alternates are necessary, and Lea said he would like to have the option for all three since the company will fix and replace the affected areas as the new line is installed versus the city crew having to follow up.

Mayor Vaught asked “will have enough money to cover the project?” Alderman Wyatt Lea asked when the city is supposed to get funds from the Develop Saline County Sales Tax. City Clerk Michelle Fuehring said the sales-tax money is to be received next month. Fuehring also said the city will have $25,000 it will not be using for sludge removal at the lagoon at this time and the city will have enough funds. Aldermen approved the total bid of $152,998.

In other news, Fuehring said she was informed by the Missouri Municipal League that the city can extend out its waste-removal contract another three years because it was part of the original contract. The contract will increase in cost by 2.5 percent during each of the three years. Aldermen approved the contract to be extended.
