Fitzgibbon Hospital began administering the first round of COVID-19 vaccines at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 28.

Chief Medical Officer and Emergency Department Physician, Dr. Darin Haug was first in line to receive the vaccine. Dr. Haug says getting the vaccine is more about the protection and prevention of others.

Dr. Haug continued by saying that getting the vaccine is an important step for everyone in the hospital and really for anybody in the community. He encourages others to get the vaccine if they have the opportunity.

Fitzgibbon Hospital President and CEO Angy Littrell says that the vaccine will only be administered to front-line healthcare workers  at this time per state mandate.Littrell says it will still be a little while for Saline County residents to have the opportunity to get the vaccine.

This COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses. The Pfizer vaccine requires 21-days between the first and second doses.

The State of Missouri has dictated the priority for vaccine administration, with front-line healthcare workers and residents of long-term care facilities receiving first priority for the vaccine.  First responders, essential workers and high risk individuals will follow with Phase 1A is complete. The schedule is subject to change but is ultimately determined by the state.
