June Rissler, 96, of Sedalia, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Cedarhurst Assisted Living Community of Sedalia.

She was born February 15, 1924 in Sedalia to Granville and Hazel Berry Thompson. At the age of 15 she was baptized at First Christian Church and maintained her membership for the next 81 years. On September 1, 1946 she married John W. Rissler (Jay) at her parents home on Quisenberry Road. Jay preceded her in death on June 27, 2004.

Her first school years were at the one room schoolhouse known as Quisenberry School. She continued her schooling to graduate from Smith-Cotton High School in 1942. She later attended Central Missouri State Teacher’s College in Warrensburg, MO.

She worked in the business office at the University of Missouri in Columbia while her husband, Jay, pursued his degree. After moving back to Sedalia, she worked for Sedalia Bank and Trust and later Third National Bank for 16 years. For anyone who ever met June she was known for her warm and sunny smile. She also spent a great deal of time helping her husband with the farm.

June was active in PTA when her children were young. She volunteered with the Red Cross at Bothwell Hospital for a number of years. She was known for her friendly nature and beautiful smile. June was a member of the Knife and Fork Club, Elks, and Moose Lodge. She and Jay enjoyed their many friends and loved to dance, play cards, and go out to dinner. June’s favorite hobbies were working in her flower beds, sewing, and shopping. She made her own wedding dress as well as most of her children’s grade school clothes. Fortunately, she passed many of these skills to her children and some of her grandchildren.

Surviving is one son, John T. Rissler (Trish Gibbons) and one daughter, Jyl Jones (Sam) all of Sedalia. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Hillary West (Brandon) of Springfield, MO, Harper Jones (Heather) of Spring TX, Courtney Blackston (Justin) of Sigonella, Italy and seven great-grandchildren: Reese West, Beau West, Jonah Blackston, Dylan Blackston, Macie Blackston, Sammy Jones and Vivian Jones.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, a daughter-in-law, Judy Rissler, and her sister, Ladye Deanne Rissler.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the lovely ladies who comforted June during her final months: Alice Ross, Kathlerleen Newbill, Cookie Poole, Mary Johnson, Connie Broaddus, Estelle Frazier and Tamara Copas.

Private graveside services will be at Crown Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Chad McMullin officiating. There will be no formal visitation, however friends may pay their respects and sign the guestbook from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2021 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
