Chiefs assistant linebackers coach Britt Reid was involved in a multi-vehicle crash that injured two young children, one critically, less than two days before the team was scheduled to depart for Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.

Reid, 35, who is Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s son, has worked on the team’s coaching staff since his father arrived before the 2013 season.

The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday on southbound Interstate 435 near Eastwood Trafficway, which is one exit south of the Chiefs’ practice facility at the Truman Sports Complex.

According to Kansas City, Missouri, police, a Chevrolet Impala that had run out of gas was sitting on the entrance ramp from Stadium Drive to I-435. The driver and lone occupant of the Chevy Impala had called family members for help. The family members responded and parked their silver Chevrolet Traverse south of the stranded car, with its lights on.

A white Ram Laramie Sport pickup was traveling on the entrance ramp to get on southbound I-435. The Ram pickup hit the left front of the Impala and continued south, slamming into the rear of the stopped Traverse.

The driver of the Impala was sitting inside his vehicle at the time of the first collision. He was not hurt.

The driver of the Traverse and the front seat adult passenger were not hurt.

Police said a 4-year-old in the back seat of the Traverse was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 5-year-old also in the back seat of the Traverse was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ram pickup suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said impairment is under investigation. Police also say Reid acknowledged he had been drinking before the crash. Police also say they could smell alcohol on Reid and that his eyes were bloodshot. Reid told officers he had two or three drinks.

The Chiefs organization released a statement that said the organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving outside linebackers coach, Britt Reid and the organization is in the process of gathering information. This is the only statement that the organization will be releasing at this time. The Chiefs organization ended the statement by sending thoughts and prayers to all involved.
