Firefighters battled a deadly structure blaze in Lafayette County on Friday, February 5.

According to Lexington Fire and Rescue, the fire in the 700 block of highland avenue was a fatality house fire.

Upon arrival of firefighters, the entire front of the house was involved, including the occupant’s bedroom. A rescue attempt was made by a Lexington Police officer when he arrived, but conditions were too dangerous.

Lexington firefighters entered the building and searched multiple rooms before having to back out due to fire conditions.

Mayview, Wellington and Higginsville Fire Departments and the Ray County Ambulance District assisted with mutual aid.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No working smoke detector was found in the residence. Lexington Fire and Rescue urges residents to have working smoke detectors in their homes.
