With the bitterly cold temperatures expected in the KMMO listening area over the next several days, it’s important to for pet owners to take the necessary precautions in keeping your pets safe.
Bring your pets inside if possible. The frigid temperatures and windy conditions can put your pet in danger of hypothermia. Even with that fur coat, if their body temperature falls below normal there is the potential that it could lead to frostbite to their ears, paws and tail. Consider putting a sweater on your pet before sending them outside. This is especially helpful if your pet is small or has short hair.
Never leave your pet outside alone during these conditions. Your pet’s senses can be overwhelmed, leading to disorientation. This can be scary and dangerous for your pet.
If you absolutely cannot bring your pet inside, make sure they have proper shelter that is well insulated and free of drafts.
Also, be sure your pet has plenty of food and water as the colder weather means that your pet expends more energy to keep them warm.
And finally, make sure you monitor your parking spots for any chemical leaks, especially antifreeze. This chemical, which is commonly used, and necessary, in vehicles can is toxic to your pet.
If it’s too cold for you to be outside, it’s more than likely too cold for your pets.
