Valentine’s Day turned busy for the Sedalia Fire Department as personnel were toned out to a structure fire.

A department spokesperson says firefighters were toned out to the blaze in the 2100 block of East Broadway Boulevard at about 10 p.m. Upon arrival, fire was noticed coming from the structure. The fire was between the attic and roof line. He said there were a lot of hidden walls, which made the fire hard to douse. He said the first fire hydrant attempted to be used was broken, so firefighters had to hook into another hydrant about two blocks away.

The spokesperson said they had to call in a few extra firefighters from the department due to gear freezing up because of the sub-zero temperatures and wind chills.

The spokesperson said they were on the scene about three hours, and the house- which suffered a lot of fire, smoke and water damage- has been deemed a total loss.

The Spokesperson said the homeowners escaped the blaze, and there were no injuries reported from the scene.

Due to all the damage, the cause of the fire has not been determined. However, the spokesperson said the owner said they had several space heaters in use at the time the blaze started.

The spokesperson said there were no signs of arson nor foul play, so the State Fire Marshall will not be summoned to investigate.
