Daniel F. “Dan” Payne, 89, of Independence, MO, died Friday, March 19, 2021, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at Nelson Cemetery in Nelson, MO, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall, MO. Face masks are required at all services, and social distancing will be observed. Born February 17, 1932, in Gilliam, MO, he was the son of the late Charles Hamner Payne and Marion Elizabeth Brightwell Payne. He was a 1948 graduate of Gilliam High School. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard for 13 years, earning the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of American Legion Post 21 in Independence. On June 6, 1953, he married Ann Verts who survives of the home. He lived in Independence since 2002, moving from Raytown, MO, and was a retired salesman. He was a longtime fan of Raytown South High School athletics.

Survivors include his wife Ann; four daughters, Gayle Kirkpatrick (Jerry) of Independence; Becky Schussler of Lee’s Summit, MO, Lori Payne of Westwood, KS and Carrie Beard of St. Charles, MO; nine grandchildren, Scott, Craig and Ross Kirkpatrick, Adam Schussler, Brian Livingston, Megan Hovick and Aaron, Cassie and Alex Beard; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles M. “Puddin” Payne and Dale Payne; and one sister, Betty Sue Wood.
