The Missouri State Highway Patrol asked drivers Monday morning to avoid eastbound Interstate 70 following a crash that involved a stolen vehicle.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the suspect, who is now is custody, was believed to be armed and driving a stolen vehicle.

A trooper had stopped the vehicle on I-70 after discovering the driver had multiple warrants. The crash happened after the driver sped away from the stop when the officer attempted to take him into custody.

The vehicle crashed on the ramp of exit 111 off I-70, overturned multiple times and rolled into a ditch. Moments later the armed driver refused to exit the vehicle.

Authorities believed the driver had a gun up to his own head, and that is when they backed off and called for a negotiation team.
After about an hour, the driver willingly exited the vehicle sheriff’s deputies took him into custody. The driver was transported to University Hospital for treatment of any injuries he may have sustained in the crash.

After the driver was taken into custody officers discovered the gun was a pellet gun. The name of the suspect has not been released at this time.
