A Gilliam man has been charged with multiple felonies for allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman and endangering the welfare of children during an incident that started on May 11 and ended on May 12.

According to authorities, multiple agencies participated in getting three children and two women to safety, but Johnathon Scheid, who released one of the children from a basement of the home, closed the basement door and refused to turn himself over to authorities. After nearly a two-hour standoff that started at approximately 11:30 p.m. on May 11 and work by a negotiator, Scheid exited the basement and was taken into custody at about 1:16 a.m. on May 12.

Scheid allegedly pushed one of the women by her neck up against a wall. The woman had noticeable red marks on her neck and sustained injuries to her right forearm and left triceps area. She also complained about pain in her right arm and thumb. Authorities recovered a pistol that was unloaded in the basement, which was consistent with the woman saying she had removed the magazine from it. After she had removed the magazine from the automatic pistol, the victim said Scheid retrieved a shotgun with a bandolier attached to it that contained 15 unfired 12-gauge rounds. There was also one unfired round in the chamber and four in the tube.

The victim claimed Scheid had vowed he was going to shoot it out with police prior to their arrival.

According to court documents, Scheid is charged with a Class D Felony for Domestic Assault in the Second Degree; three counts of a Class D Felony for Endangering the Welfare of a Child; Class E Felonies for Unlawful Use of a Weapon- Exhibiting and Resisting Arrest; an Unclassified Felony for Armed Criminal Action; and a misdemeanor for assault. Bond is fixed at $25,000 cash only.

Scheid was arraigned on Friday, May 14. A confined-docket hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at Saline County Circuit Court.
