kenneth-schreiner-2

Kenneth A. Schreiner, 90, of Kansas City, formerly of Sedalia, passed away into God’s open arms on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospice House.

Kenneth was born May 28, 1931, in Pettis County, to the late Alfred J. and Paula M. (Gerken) Schreiner. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith by his grandfather, Rev. Henry Schreiner. He was confirmed May of 1945 by Rev. H.J. Heidbreder.

He attended schools at High Point and graduated from Smith Cotton High School with the class of 1949. He went on to graduate from State Fair Community College. He took technical classes in Kansas City for car air conditioning instillation and repairs.

On May 6, 1951, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, he married Wanda Lee Young, his high school sweetheart. They were married almost 60 years, before her passing on March 27, 2011.

Ken served in the Korean conflict overseas with the Army Armor Division, driving and working on the tanks. (There is a reoccurring theme here).  Ken received the Korean Service medal with an Honorable discharge, April 16, 1960.

After his discharge, Ken worked with his father, at Schreiner Service Station, until his father’s death. Ken took over the family business, selling auto and tractor tires, auto repairs, oil changes and installation of (new at that time) car air conditioners. This business having the same name for over 60 years, remained in the same location and was his childhood home, until Ken retired in 2001.

Ken was continually active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, serving on various boards and committees.  He enjoyed singing bass in the church choir.

Ken was active with Boy Scout Troop #60 from 1955 to 1969, where he served as headmaster, and let his daughter come to some of the camp outings.  Ken became a member of the Sedalia Rotary Club in February 1972. He served as president in the Rotary from 1990-1991 and was proud of his perfect attendance record. Ken was also a member of the American Legion Post #2591 and volunteered at Open Door where he served on the board, in various positions.

Ken was an avid car enthusiast, especially NASCAR racing. In his later years, Ken looked forward to traveling to various annual races with his daughter.  He was a member of the Sedalia Auto Club and West Central Missouri Vintage Auto Club.

Ken is survived by his daughter Melody Gross and her husband Paul, of Blue Springs, MO; sister Patricia Schreiner of Marshfield, MO. Granddaughter Sheri Wells of Overland Park, KS; Grandson Brian Steen and his wife Megan, of Columbia, MO; Grandson Jesse Gross of Denver, CO. Four great-granddaughters Sierra Wells, of Overland Park, KS; Sadie Steen of Columbia; Zibby Gross of Denver, CO; and Hayley Patterson of Kansas City.  Along with a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00am, Thursday, June 17, 2021 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Jeremy Freeman officiating. Burial will follow with full military rites in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-7pm, Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.  Memorials to St Paul’s Lutheran Church may be left at or mailed to McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, 519 S. Ohio, Sedalia, MO 65301.
