The Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education recently was honored with the Missouri School Board Association’s 2021 Governance Team Award. Only 13 districts in the state earned the recognition.

According to MSBA, the award signifies “outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development, regional and statewide leadership, and active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools demonstrated by (the) school board and superintendent.”

The board includes President Diana Nichols, Vice President Scott Gardner, Treasurer Kenny Coffelt, Secretary Barbara Schrader and directors Michael Stees, Matthew Herren and Sam Kempton; past board president Dr. Jeff Sharp, who retired in April after more than 20 years of service, also was recognized.

Board accomplishments that met the award criteria include:
· All seven school board members obtained Essential CBM certification from MSBA (or were grandfathered from the requirement).
· All seven board members have fulfilled the Refresher Training requirement for the 2020-2021 board term year through MSBA.
· At least two board members achieved MSBA’s Advanced Board Member certification.
· At least one board member (Nichols) achieved MSBA’s Master Board Member certification.

The Sedalia 200 board’s achievement was formally recognized at MSBA’s “Igniting Great Ideas Summit” on June 19 at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield.

Nichols said, “Our entire school district staff is required to obtain professional development and continuing education that is applicable to their specific job duties. School board members should lead by example and our membership with the Missouri School Boards’ Association provides us an opportunity to obtain continuous improvement through ongoing professional development.”
