Charges have been filed after a man was shot and died in Benton County on Sunday, July 18.
According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 4:50 a.m., Benton County Central Dispatch received a call from a male stating a middle-aged man entered the rear seat of his truck and yelled to the driver that he was shot and to drive. The assailant continued to fire at the vehicle, striking it as it left the scene.
The driver of the truck transported the victim, 28-year-old Lance M. Lyman, of Warsaw, to the Warsaw Ambulance Base where personnel started life-saving measures. However, Lyman succumbed to his injuries before he could be life-flighted.
Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) SWAT team assistance was requested. Deputies and SWAT members responded to the scene of the shooting at the end of Clearwater Road near Warsaw and attempted to make contact with the alleged shooter, identified as a 24-year-old John Moreno, currently residing in Benton County. He was arrested without further incident after the MSHP Swat Team surrounded his residence.
According to information received from witnesses, Lyman intervened when a female, whose name is not being disclosed at this time, was allegedly assaulted by Moreno.
Court documents say Moreno is charged with Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Armed Criminal Action and Assault in the First Degree. Moreno is being held with no bond at Benton County Jail.
Hearing is scheduled to be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Benton County Circuit Court.
