The first day of classes for students in the Marshall Public School District is Tuesday, August 24.

According to a release from Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher, an Open House at individual schools is the evening before.

Dr. Maher says, “Many of us have questions about how school will be opened since the status of the virus and its variants seems to change daily. We will work hard to get you all the information, suggestions, and solutions before we welcome MPS students back.”

In the meantime, Dr. Maher lists few items, including a change:
1) The first change is that of the all-district meeting, scheduled for August 23. She says due to the dramatic upswing in the COVID variant, the Central Office administration has decided to change the delivery of the Back-To-School opening-day celebration. The meeting will now be held at Spainhower Primary School and live-streamed to all other buildings. So, separate faculties will be in their buildings with their principals who can answer questions or get in touch with us for answers.

2) According to a federal order issued by the CDC, masks are required on public and private school buses. Even in schools where masks are not mandated, this order is a requirement and may not be overturned by the local school district.

3) As we’ve learned, things change very quickly as this pandemic continues. Until further notice from Central Office and approval of the Board, wearing a mask in MPS buildings (or for outside activities) will remain an individual choice. We all must respect students’, parents’, and each other’s decisions concerning face coverings. All areas, including classrooms, will reflect this stance; and, unless approved by the MPS Central Office, there is no option for employees to overturn this rule.

4) The first day of school is a full day, despite what one version of the school calendar said.

5) August 13, 16, and 17 are non-contracted days for teachers and staff, except for administration.

Dr. Maher adds, “Thank you for making students the number one reason for all our decisions. The best place for kids to be is in school, and MPS will guarantee the community of Marshall that we strive to educate and empower all students this school year.”
