Leonard R. Simmons Sr., age 87, of rural Sweet Springs, MO, died Friday, August 13, 2021, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 20, at Southside Assembly of God Church in Marshall, with Rev. Cliff Cato and William W. Harlow officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Born March 2, 1934, in Georgetown, MO, he was the son of the late William J. Simmons and Nan Spratley Simmons. On October 18, 1952, he married Betty Jean Hutchison who preceded him in death on June 20, 2020. Leonard lived in the rural Sweet Springs area most of his life where he owned and operated numerous businesses throughout the years including Betty’s Truck Stop. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard and was a member of Southside Assembly of God.

Survivors include four children: Betty Arlene Williams (Larry), Ronnie Simmons (Renee), Loretta “Retta” Kelz (Scott), all of rural Sweet Springs and Pamela Brandt (Rick) of rural Versailles; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.

In addition to his parents and wife, Leonard was preceded in death by one son, Leonard R. Simmons Jr.; seven brothers and five sisters.
