An area law-enforcement agency is alerting residents about two current phone scams.

The Sedalia Police Department says there has been a report of a local number, in which the caller demands money while a woman yells in the background. The scammer allegedly told a resident, who answered the phone, that he would “kill her” if they didn’t send money.

Officials say the phone number the suspect called from belonged to an innocent citizen who then received numerous phone calls from persons accusing him of being a scammer.

Another phone scam that authorities warn residents of is a report of a suspect calling from the Police Department’s main phone number and claiming to be a police officer. The scammer told a victim that she missed her court date, advised her of overdue fines and  said she would be arrested if she did not make a payment. The victim was even “transferred” to a police supervisor who provided personal information to the victim about where she lived and worked.

The Sedalia Police Department says “If you ever have any questions about whether or not you are being scammed, hang up and call the police.”
