During the month of August, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service agency annually gives the WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence to local health agencies who excel in their efforts in supporting breastfeeding WIC mothers.

Eight Missouri WIC agencies were awarded the Gold award this year – including the Saline County Health Department.

SCHD Registered Dietitian, Jana Curry explained the significance of the award.

Curry then recognized two peer councilor’s efforts in the WIC program.

According to Missouri WIC’s website, the Missouri WIC program provides supplemental food, health care referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding promotion and support to eligible pregnant women, new mothers, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to age five.
