Marshall Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher provided an in-depth look at how funds from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) have been used by the district during the most-recent school board meeting.

Dr. Maher said the district has been able to purchase HVAC systems at Eastwood Elementary School and Bueker Middle School (BMS); air purifiers in all buildings; an elevator and cameras in BMS; walk-in coolers for kitchens; an electronic scrolling sign at Central Office; and the purchase of the funeral home on South Odell Avenue for a green space at BMS.

To be eligible for these funds, Dr. Maher said the district had to post the compliance plan on its website and submit the application to DESE.

During the 2022, ’23and ’24 school years, Dr. Maher explained the district plans to use these funds for salaries to deliver student services before and after school, in the summer and on Saturdays; purchase five buses; employ a full-time translator for three years- salary and benefits; employ a full-time career counselor three years- salary and benefits; provide student programs and materials; PLC and administrator professional growth; and provide Saturday adult and student wellness programs.

Dr. Maher also reported for the 2021-22 school year, funds will be used for after-school, Saturday, summer, etc., programs. Teachers will be paid $50 per hour; transportation will be provided for non-regularly scheduled learning experiences (tutoring, activities, services); and whenever possible, district programs will be blended with other community programs.
