For the second time in a week, the Marshall School Board held a meeting to explain and consider approval of the district’s tax levy.

Board President Bryon Jacques said it was because of his mistake the board did not entertain comments from the public during the previous meeting, hence the reason for this meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Carol Maher explained how the $2.8316 tax rate proposed has an affect on residents’ taxes by giving an example of how the taxing system works.

After hearing an explanation by Saline County Assessor Jessica Adcock Goodman on why the tax assessment for most real and personal property increased in the county and public comments by Jack Lenz Jr. and Roger Blakely, it was time to vote.

Dr. Maher acknowledged the board could approve a rate as low as $2.75. However, the board voted to approve the tax rate at the proposed rate of $2.8316.
