The Johnson County Commission held a public hearing to set the 2021 tax levies for General Revenue, Road and Bridge and Sheltered Workshop on Monday, August 30.
During the hearing, County Clerk Diane Thompson informed the Commission that the assessed value for the county is currently at $728,210,055. This is an increase of $43,761,175 over the 2020 assessed value.
According to a news release, due to the increase in assessed value, Missouri law requires that levy amounts be reduced according to a formula provided by the State Auditor so that revenues are substantially the same from one year to the next.
Following discussion on the current year tax rate ceiling for each of the three levies being considered, Commissioner Charlie Kavanaugh motioned and Commissioner John Marr seconded to set the levies as follows:
- General Revenue set at 0.1190 cents – reduced from 0.1300 in 2020;
- Road and Bridge set at 0.2363 cents – reduced from 0.2400 in 2020; and
- Sheltered Workshop set at 0.1156 cents.
The motions passed unanimously.
City officials say the levy amounts have been submitted to the State Auditor for review. Following certification by the State, all levy rates for all taxing entities will be provided to the County Collector and Assessor for the 2021 tax bill mailing.
