If you lost a family member due to COVID-19, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.

According to FEMA’s website, FEMA has provided over $1.088 billion to more than 165,000 people to assist with COVID-19-related funeral costs for deaths occurring on or after January 20, 2020, reported as of Tuesday, September 7.

To be eligible for assistance, officials say applicants must be able to provide the following:

– “For deaths that occurred after May 16, 2020, the death certificate must indicate the death was attributed to COVID-19.

– For deaths that occurred from January 20 to May 16, 2020, any death certificate that does not attribute the cause of death to COVID-19 must be accompanied by a signed statement listing COVID-19 as a cause or contributing cause of death.”
